The Dalai Lama has been forced to issue a public statement after his name appeared more than 150 times in documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein that were released by the United States Department of Justice.
The files, which were released as part of ongoing efforts to make the Epstein investigation more transparent, included emails referencing events that the Tibetan spiritual leader was expected to attend. They also revealed discussions about arranging possible dinners and meetings involving him, prompting widespread media coverage and significant public concern.
The Dalai Lama's office moved quickly to address the references, issuing a statement that sought to contextualise the appearances of his name in the documents. The spiritual leader's representatives said his name appearing in Epstein-linked communications did not imply any improper relationship or knowledge of Epstein's criminal activities, noting that Epstein was known to cultivate relationships with prominent global figures across politics, science, academia and religion.
The Epstein files have implicated or referenced numerous high-profile individuals since documents began to be released, causing reputational damage and prompting statements from multiple public figures. The sheer scale of Epstein's social network, which he cultivated deliberately over decades, means that proximity to his name in documents does not automatically indicate wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, the revelation has generated significant discussion online and in the press, particularly given the Dalai Lama's status as one of the world's most revered spiritual figures. The frequency of the references, over 150 appearances, has made it difficult for the story to be dismissed as a passing mention.
